Height, period, and direction, shaped by each site’s exposure and shelter. A sheltered cove and an open point get very different calls from the same swell.

State and timing from the nearest NOAA station in US waters, so you can plan the slack.
Current and temperature
Ocean current strength and sea surface temperature, so you know what to wear and whether to expect a drift.
Visibility
Recent rain and chop, for an honest visibility estimate rather than a hopeful one.

The rating comes from a deterministic, unit-tested scoring engine, never from an AI. Hard stops for thunderstorms, big surf, and strong current override everything else.
